one per person

One Per Person (OPP) is an independent animated short that I worked on for 1.5 years as a freelance side project. The project was funded successfully by Kickstarter and was finished by artists working in many different parts of the world, on a voluntary basis.

Scope of Work

I worked on OPP as a Sequence Key Lighting and Compositing artist and was responsible for setting up the look, light rig and compositing rig for multiple sequences. Since I was one of the first lighting artists to join the team,  I had to also help debug tools and iron out a workflow structure to help subsequent artists get on board a better functioning pipeline.

Challenges

Working on this project was full of technical challenges because it was an independent project with very limited resources and manpower. We had to work with Maya's student license and Mental Ray, which has many limitations compared to industry standard renderers. Compositing was done using Adobe After Effects since it had a monthly subscription model that was within the project's budget.

We had to do all the systems setup and render tests on our personal machines at home following online instructions. All the artists were working in different time-zones and so communicating with each other in a timely manner was also a challenge.

Our work had to be constantly synced with the cloud data to ensure that we were all on the same page - using the same version of tools and assets.

Overall it was quite an interesting challenge to take on while also having a very busy full-time job.

Fun Fact

The film took 5 years to complete and was screened at various film festivals across the country.
