HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2

Scope of Work

Lighting, compositing and final completion of several key and non-key shots. Special rig setup for particular sections of sequences.

Tasks of note

  • Developed the look of Valka's (Hiccup's mother) reveal and brought all shots to completion. While the environment lighting was very dramatic and contrasting, the facial lighting had to have a soft and radiant quality. Everything also had to show interactive lighting from the fire sources.
  • Worked on and completed the long reveal shot of the Bewilderbeast's dragon nest, which had a camera move from one end of the environment to the other.
  • Worked on several shots of Valka and Stoic's reunion dance sequence.

Challenges

The Bewilderbeast dragon nest shot had very high environment complexity due to dense foliage and water as well as the long panoramic camera move. The characters had to move from shadow into light and maintain their lighting quality from all angles. The lake required reflections and refractions from all the surrounding 3D and 2D (matte painting) elements, including moving waterfalls, mist and flying dragons.
